SnowStates provides modeled snowpack textures to help you find better snow. It is NOT an avalanche safety tool and does not predict avalanches. Always consult your local avalanche center, carry proper rescue equipment, and use your own judgment before entering the backcountry.

Data Interpretation & Safety

SnowStates is a topographical data modeling application designed to help you find the best snow. It is not an avalanche safety tool, nor does it attempt to predict avalanches.

Understanding Modeled Textures

We model physical variables like wind loading intensity, temperature gradients, and solar radiation exposure. These metrics allow us to visualize the projected texture and state of the snowpack on specific slopes (e.g., highlighting where powder may be preserved versus where wind or sun crusts are likely forming).

Data Limitations

Our 3D map interface provides a macro-level hypothesis of snow conditions based on weather inputs and terrain data. However, localized micro-terrain features, variable tree cover, and unseen historical layers cannot be perfectly captured by the model.

Your Responsibility in the Backcountry

Because our engine is focused on finding good snow rather than mitigating risk, you must always rely on real-world observations and official avalanche bulletins to make safety decisions. The map is a tool for terrain exploration and route optimization, not a definitive truth about snowpack stability.
